The latest Vahan retail sales figures for July 2026 have just rolled in, and they present a fascinating look at the competitive landscape of the EV passenger vehicle market.

While the overall numbers for the top 10 makers saw a very slight month-over-month (MoM) dip, the individual brand stories reveal significant momentum shifts, resilient newcomers, and legacy brands waking up to the EV demand.

Market Highlights

The July data offers several key insights into consumer behavior and manufacturer momentum:

1. Tata Motors Continues to Widen the Gap

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility remains the undisputed king of the Indian EV hill. Not only did they comfortably maintain their 1st position with 13,619 units sold in July, but they were also the only high-volume manufacturer in the top 4 to post positive growth (+6.74%). Tata's diverse portfolio of accessible EVs continues to resonate strongly with Indian buyers, making them seemingly immune to the slight market contraction seen by their immediate rivals.

2. A Bump in the Road for Mahindra and MG

The battle for the second and third spots remains intense, but both contenders faced headwinds in July. Mahindra Electric saw a mild 5.72% drop, settling at 7,708 units. Meanwhile, JSW MG Motor experienced an 8.35% decline, dropping to 5,664 units. This indicates that while they have solid market share, sustaining aggressive month-on-month growth at higher volumes is becoming a challenge.

3. Vinfast Holds Steady While BYD Slips

In the battle of the global EV specialists operating in India, Vietnam's Vinfast had a solid month. Entering the top 5 with 1,480 units, they posted a modest 2.21% growth, showing consistent market penetration. On the other hand, Chinese automaker BYD saw a sharp drop of almost 20%, falling below the 1,000-unit mark to 746 retail sales.

4. Legacy Giants Are Waking Up

Perhaps the most interesting data points come from the bottom half of the table. Traditional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) heavyweights are starting to show massive percentage gains, albeit from lower base volumes:

  • Hyundai saw an impressive 51% surge in sales, crossing the 500-unit mark.

  • Toyota registered an eye-watering 251% growth, jumping from just 35 units in June to 123 in July.

While these numbers are currently small relative to Tata or Mahindra, this aggressive percentage growth indicates that legacy brands are beginning to push their EV offerings more seriously.
