Here's Why India's EV 2-Wheeler Brands Are Switching to LFP Batteries

India's electric two-wheeler market is undergoing a quiet but massive shift under the hood: manufacturers are increasingly transitioning from Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells. LFP batteries offer significantly higher thermal stability, meaning they are inherently safer against overheating and thermal runaways in 40°C+ summer temperatures. Additionally, LFP cells typically withstand up to twice as many charging cycles as their NMC counterparts, resulting in slower battery degradation and extending the overall lifespan of the scooter.
Major players are already aggressively leading this transition. Ola Electric recently expanded its portfolio with the mass-market S1Z scooter, highlighting its use of indigenously developed, made-in-India LFP "Bharat Cells". Ather Energy, historically a staunch proponent of high-density NMC cells for its scooters, has pragmatically adapted to market needs by introducing a 2.7 kWh LFP variant of its family-oriented Rizta scooter. Beyond the market leaders, brands like Ampere, Simple Energy, Suzuki (with the e-Access), Bguass and Lectrix are also banking on LFP chemistry, heavily promoting long-term reliability over sheer energy density.
Despite the growing LFP trend, NMC batteries aren't disappearing just yet. Legacy stalwarts like the TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak continue to rely heavily on NMC chemistry. The core advantage of NMC is its higher energy density, which allows manufacturers to extract more riding range from a lighter, smaller battery pack. However, as the EV industry pushes toward localized manufacturing and aims to eliminate reliance on expensive materials like cobalt, the balance is rapidly tipping. For the mass market, where durability, affordability, and high-temperature safety are paramount, LFP is quickly becoming the definitive battery choice for the Indian EV revolution.
