Market Highlights
The top 10 automakers collectively sold 31,118 units in June, up from 27,884 units in May. This represents a healthy Month-on-Month (MoM) growth of roughly 11.6%. However, looking closer at the numbers reveals several distinct storylines in the market:
1. The Undisputed King: Tata Motors Maintains Its Throne
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility remains the heavyweight champion of the Indian EV landscape. Crossing the 12,000-unit mark in June (up from 10,870 in May), Tata alone accounts for nearly 38% of the top 10's total market share. Their diverse portfolio, ranging from budget-friendly city EVs to premium SUVs, continues to resonate strongly with the Indian masses.
2. Mahindra & MG Keep the Heat On
Mahindra Electric and JSW MG Motor are fiercely defending their podium finishes. Mahindra showed impressive momentum, jumping from 6,542 to 7,645 units, proving that their aggressive electric SUV strategy is paying dividends. MG Motor isn't far behind, crossing the 5,700-unit mark. Together, these top three manufacturers control the lion's share of the market, leaving the rest to battle for the remaining slice of the pie.
3. The Curious Case of the Korean Siblings (Hyundai & Kia)
While almost every brand on the list celebrated a green month, the Korean automotive giants faced headwinds. Kia experienced a slight dip (452 to 446 units), while Hyundai took a noticeable hit, dropping from 474 units in May to just 347 in June. With increasing competition in the sub-₹20 Lakh segment, Hyundai and Kia might need to refresh their line-ups or rethink their pricing strategies to win back momentum.
4. The Rise of the Challengers: Maruti, VinFast, and BYD
Maruti Suzuki is steadily climbing the ranks. Long considered a latecomer to the pure EV race, their June figure of nearly 1,900 units shows they are finally converting their massive ICE trust into EV sales.
Perhaps the most interesting story is VinFast Auto. The Vietnamese automaker, relatively new to the Indian arena, is holding strong at #5 with 1,394 units sold in June. Alongside BYD (860 units), these global players are carving out a solid niche for themselves among tech-forward Indian buyers.
5. The Luxury Segment is Quietly Expanding
At the bottom of the top 10, the luxury EV war is brewing. BMW India outpaced Mercedes-Benz, recording 486 units in June compared to Mercedes' 234. A jump from 374 to 486 for BMW is a remarkable 30% MoM growth, indicating a high appetite for premium electric mobility among high-net-worth individuals.
