Aptera (SEV) now says it needs $25M to start solar EV production

Aptera Motors has announced a major reduction in the capital it expects to need to begin production of its solar electric vehicle. The company now estimates that approximately $25 million will be required to reach the start of production, a significant decrease from its previous estimate of $40–$45 million. This revised figure is expected to cover supplier purchases, remaining tooling, and the final low-volume assembly line at Aptera’s facility in Carlsbad, California.

The company plans to begin building its first 40 production vehicles by the end of 2026, with initial customer deliveries targeted for early 2027. These plans remain dependent on Aptera securing financing on acceptable terms, maintaining supplier timelines, and obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.

Aptera estimates that it will need approximately $65 million in total to reach a production rate of 500 vehicles per month. At this level, the company believes it could potentially support ongoing operations through vehicle sales. To expand further toward a high-volume production target of approximately 20,000 vehicles per year, Aptera expects to require a total investment of around $115 million.

The lower capital requirements are primarily attributed to Aptera’s partnership with Launch Design. The partnership is expected to improve the vehicle’s manufacturability, provide access to an international supplier network, and reduce costs through a revised bill of materials. Aptera estimates that these changes could lower its full production investment by approximately $65–$90 million compared with earlier projections.

Although the updated plan represents progress toward commercial production, Aptera’s targets are still subject to financing, supply-chain performance, manufacturing development, and regulatory approvals. If successfully executed, the company’s leaner production strategy could help bring its solar electric vehicles to customers while reducing the amount of capital needed to scale the business.
