Ather Konarc to get swingarm-mounted motor, instead of mid-mounted

Ather Energy is making a bold engineering pivot with its upcoming Konarc scooter, and it all starts with what’s powering the rear wheel. Set to debut on August 29, 2026, at the Ather Community Day in Bengaluru, the Konarc will be the first production model built on Ather’s all-new EL platform — and the most striking change is the move from a mid-mounted, belt-driven motor to a swingarm-mounted one. For a brand that has long championed the mid-mount layout across its 450 series and Rizta, this is no small shift. It signals Ather’s intent to crack the mass-market segment without losing its engineering credibility.

The swingarm-mounted motor on the Konarc replaces the toothed belt final drive with a gear-driven transmission, eliminating one of the most common pain points Ather owners have faced: belt wear, noise, and the need for periodic tension checks. By mounting the motor directly on the swingarm, Ather has stripped away an entire layer of mechanical complexity. Service intervals are expected to double to 10,000 km, and overall service times could halve compared to current models — a big win for family commuters who want reliability above all else.
This redesign is not just about durability; it is also about building a scooter that is cheaper to manufacture and easier to scale. The EL platform uses a unibody steel frame instead of the multi-part aluminium construction seen on the 450 series, and removing the belt simplifies the assembly line significantly. Ather can now tune the platform for different body styles, wheel sizes, and battery capacities without being boxed in by the constraints of a belt-drive system. That flexibility is exactly what the company needs as it targets buyers below the Rizta, going head-to-head with the Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube in the affordable electric scooter space.
Importantly, Ather is not abandoning its roots. The 450 and Rizta families will continue with their proven mid-mounted, belt-driven architecture. The Konarc and the EL platform represent an expansion, not a replacement — a way for Ather to bring its refined engineering philosophy to a much wider audience. If the swingarm-mounted motor delivers on its promise of quieter operation, lower maintenance, and smoother power delivery, the Konarc could very well redefine what buyers expect from an affordable electric scooter.
