India’s EV Two-Wheeler Sales Cross 1.5 Million in 2026; Maharashtra Leads the Charge

The year 2026 marks a monumental milestone in India's transition to sustainable mobility, with electric two-wheeler retail sales officially crossing the 1.5 million mark according to the latest Vahan retail data. This achievement underscores a massive shift in consumer confidence, driven by improved battery technologies, expanding charging infrastructure, and the aggressive push by both legacy automakers and new-age startups.

The widespread adoption of electric two-wheelers is visibly led by a few key regions. Maharashtra has emerged as the undisputed frontrunner, commanding a dominant 14.7% of the national market share. This translates to a massive 232,544 vehicles sold within the state. Following closely behind are Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which account for 12.6% (199,492 units) and 11.7% (184,287 units) of the national share, respectively. The heavy concentration of sales in these western and southern states highlights the impact of progressive state-level EV policies, local manufacturing hubs, and early infrastructure development.

Beyond the top three, northern, central, and eastern states are showing remarkable enthusiasm for electric mobility, proving that the EV ecosystem is penetrating deeply across the country. Uttar Pradesh holds a solid 8.2% market share, translating to 129,145 vehicle sales. Madhya Pradesh is also a major contributor with 7.1% of the share and 111,741 retail units sold. Furthermore, states like Odisha (101,822 units) and Rajasthan (87,774 units) are posting excellent numbers. This indicates that EV adoption is rapidly expanding into tier-2 and tier-3 regional markets.

When analyzing the brands successfully steering this electric revolution, it is clear that legacy automotive giants have leveraged their vast dealership networks and manufacturing prowess to claim the top spots. TVS Motor Company Ltd stands as the undisputed market leader, achieving a phenomenal 414,488 EV sales in 2026. Bajaj Auto Ltd secures the second position with an equally impressive 356,245 units. Ather Energy Ltd continues to put up a formidable fight as a dedicated EV manufacturer, capturing the third spot with 263,155 units.
The competitive landscape remains fierce as other major players battle for market share. Hero MotoCorp Ltd and Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd round out the top five highest-selling manufacturers, posting 173,883 and 108,359 units respectively. The presence of brands like Greaves Electric Mobility Ltd (72,212 units) alongside newer entrants like River Mobility Pvt Ltd (39,233 units) and BGauss Auto Private Limited (35,452 units) reflects a vibrant, highly competitive ecosystem that offers a wide variety of choices to the Indian consumer. As 2026 comes to a close, this 1.5 million sales milestone serves as a strong foundation for an even greener future on Indian roads.
