Only 10.6% of Indian Two-Wheelers Sold in August Were Electric

The shift towards electric mobility in India continues to gain steady traction, especially within the highly competitive two-wheeler segment. According to the latest Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) retail data, electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for a solid 10.68% of all two-wheelers sold across the country in August 2026. This double-digit market share marks a significant milestone in the gradual transition away from traditional fossil fuels.
When analyzing the year-over-year performance, the growth trajectory of battery-powered scooters and motorcycles is clear. In August 2025, EVs held a more modest 7.66% share of the market. Fast forward twelve months, and that footprint has expanded by over 3 percentage points. Conversely, the market share for traditional petrol and ethanol-powered two-wheelers has contracted from 92.10% in August 2025 to 89.23% in August 2026.
While the annual growth is promising for the EV industry, the data does reveal a slight month-over-month dip. July 2026 saw electric two-wheelers capture 11.24% of retail sales, indicating a marginal contraction heading into August. Meanwhile, alternative fuel options like CNG and LPG continue to represent a negligible fraction of consumer choice in this segment, remaining firmly under 1%.
