Porsche is reportedly considering the return of a gas-powered version of its popular Macan SUV, with the new model expected to arrive around 2028. Rather than replacing the electric Macan, the petrol-powered version would be sold alongside it, giving customers the freedom to choose between traditional internal-combustion power and an electric drivetrain.

The plan was revealed by Porsche CEO Mark Leiters, who said the company needs to offer a more balanced range of vehicles. While Porsche remains committed to electric cars, changing customer preferences and declining sales in key markets such as China have encouraged the automaker to rethink its strategy.

The original gas-powered Macan has remained one of Porsche’s best-selling models since its introduction in 2014. However, sales of the petrol version have fallen as Porsche transitions toward electric vehicles. At the same time, demand for the electric Macan has grown modestly, suggesting that customers may still want the familiar performance and convenience of a gas-powered SUV.

Porsche’s decision reflects the wider uncertainty facing the luxury-car industry. Many manufacturers are investing heavily in electric vehicles, but buyers are not moving to EVs at the same pace everywhere. By offering both petrol and electric versions of the Macan, Porsche can appeal to traditional car enthusiasts while continuing its shift toward cleaner technology.

The company is also developing an electric successor to the 718 sports car, although Porsche has made it clear that an electric 911 is not expected in the near future. For now, the return of the gas-powered Macan could help Porsche maintain its performance-focused identity while adapting gradually to the changing automotive market.
