Upcoming Honda QC3 Gets a Bigger 3 kWh Battery, but a Hub Motor Instead of Mid-Drive

Honda is preparing to launch the new QC3 electric scooter in India. Expected to be priced near Rs 1.20 lakh, the QC3 is designed as a straightforward daily commuter. It comes with a 3 kWh battery pack that offers a claimed range of 145 km. For power, the scooter relies on a standard hub-mounted motor. While this design keeps the price lower and frees up space for a generous 32-litre underseat storage, placing the motor directly inside the rear wheel means more unsprung weight on the suspension, which can slightly affect ride comfort over bumps.  


In contrast, other new electric scooters like the Honda Activa e and the Suzuki e-Access use a much better mid-mounted motor setup. The Activa e uses a 6 kW motor, and the Suzuki e-Access is equipped with a 4.1 kW motor. By placing the motor in the middle of the scooter's frame and using a belt drive to send power to the rear wheel, these scooters achieve better overall weight distribution. This mid-drive design results in improved handling, better balance, and a smoother power delivery compared to a basic hub motor.  


The choice between these setups comes down to everyday priorities. The mid-mounted motors in the Activa e and e-Access provide a more stable and refined riding experience for those who want better handling. However, the Honda QC3’s hub motor approach keeps the scooter affordable and highly practical. It serves as a simple, no-nonsense option for buyers who are focused on solid range and maximum storage space rather than advanced riding dynamics.
