Volkswagen Unveils the World’s Most Efficient Near-Production Electric Car

Volkswagen has just unveiled the "Mission Efficiency," a groundbreaking near-production electric vehicle that is rewriting the rules on EV range and aerodynamics. Built as a technological showcase, this futuristic 2+2 seater proves that hyper-efficient driving doesn't require exotic, out-of-reach components. Instead, Volkswagen relied on its affordable, large-scale MEB+ platform, the same foundation used for the ID. Polo, demonstrating that remarkable energy efficiency can be built using standard production technology.
At the core of the Mission Efficiency's success is its radical aerodynamic profile, which helped the prototype secure three new world records. Boasting an incredibly low drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.158, it now holds the record for road-approved cars. This slippery, teardrop-shaped design allowed the vehicle to achieve a jaw-dropping real-world energy consumption of just 6.89 kWh/100 km (excluding charging losses). During a massive 1,278-kilometer test drive from Germany to Austria, the car required only one stop to recharge its 54.9 kWh battery, arriving at its destination with 164 kilometers of range still to spare.

To hit these unparalleled efficiency milestones, Volkswagen's engineering team optimized every square inch of the vehicle. The Mission Efficiency features a fully clad underbody, covered rear wheels, frameless windows, and patented rim deflectors that prevent air from creating drag-inducing turbulence. To complement the aerodynamics, a 370-watt solar photovoltaic system integrated into the glass roof and boot lid can add up to 30 kilometers of free driving range per day. Volkswagen also partnered with Continental to design specialized, ultra-low rolling resistance tires for the project.
The Volkswagen Mission Efficiency shows that the future of electric mobility will not depend only on bigger batteries. Improvements in aerodynamics, tyres, braking, lightweight materials, solar power and electric motors can all help reduce energy consumption. Although the Mission Efficiency is a technology prototype rather than a regular production vehicle, its innovations could influence Volkswagen’s future electric cars and make them more efficient, practical and affordable.
