BYD Overtakes Hyundai in September EV Retail Sales

BYD has overtaken Hyundai in India’s electric car sales for September 2026, marking a notable shift in the country’s rapidly expanding EV market. According to Vahan retail sales data, BYD India sold 831 electric cars, while Hyundai recorded 789 units during the month.

The result is especially significant because BYD achieved this performance with a strong month-on-month recovery. Its sales increased from 566 units in August to 831 units in September, representing growth of around 46.8%. Hyundai, in contrast, saw its sales decline from 840 units in August to 789 units in September, a fall of approximately 6.1%.

Although BYD’s lead over Hyundai was only 42 units, the result highlights the growing demand for premium electric vehicles in India. BYD’s portfolio, which focuses on long-range vehicles, advanced technology and premium features, appears to be attracting more buyers in major urban markets.

Hyundai continues to have strong brand recognition and a wider presence in India, but its September performance suggests that it may need to expand and refresh its electric vehicle range. As more international and domestic brands enter the market, competition is expected to become even tougher.

Meanwhile, Tata Motors remained the clear leader in India’s EV market, followed by Mahindra and MG. However, BYD’s latest numbers show that the premium EV segment is gaining momentum and that established players such as Hyundai can no longer take their position for granted.
