Highlights
Based on the retail data, several distinct trends are shaping the latter half of 2026:
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility continues its absolute reign over the Indian EV sector. Registering a steady climb from 13,815 units in August to an impressive 14,722 units in September, Tata’s early-mover advantage and expanding portfolio make it a tough giant to topple. Mahindra is holding strong in the second spot, showing a healthy month-over-month (MoM) jump to 7,741 units in September, proving that domestic manufacturers are the ones dictating the market's pace.
One of the most notable storylines is the performance of VinFast Auto India. With 2,961 units sold in September (up from 2,239 in August), the brand is securing its footing firmly in the top 5, signaling strong consumer reception to its new offerings. Tesla, while dealing with smaller volumes, saw its numbers more than double from 117 to 279 units, indicating that initial deliveries might be picking up steam.
Not everyone saw green in September. Maruti Suzuki, which traditionally dominates the internal combustion engine (ICE) market, faced a noticeable drop in EV sales, falling from 1,472 units in August to 1,095 units in September. Hyundai mirrored this sluggishness, dropping slightly from 840 to 789 units. These traditional powerhouses will likely need to recalibrate their EV strategies to fend off specialized EV competitors.
The premium segment is quietly enjoying a lucrative growth streak. BMW had a phenomenal month, nearly doubling its sales to 501 units in September, while Mercedes-Benz also jumped from 63 to 101 units. BYD is similarly gaining traction, growing to 831 units, showing that buyers are increasingly willing to spend a premium for technology and range.
