Kia Overtakes Maruti Suzuki in September EV Retail Sales

Kia India has overtaken Maruti Suzuki in India’s electric-car market in September 2026, according to Vahan retail data. Kia recorded 1,256 EV retail sales during the month, compared with 1,095 units sold by Maruti Suzuki. This helped Kia move ahead of Maruti Suzuki in the electric passenger-vehicle sales ranking.
Kia’s performance improved sharply from August, when the company registered 850 electric cars. Its September sales rose by nearly 48% month on month, while Maruti Suzuki’s EV sales declined from 1,472 units in August. The drop came despite the e Vitara being Maruti Suzuki’s only electric model in the market.
The strong response to the Kia Syros EV appears to have been a key reason behind Kia’s improved numbers. The compact electric SUV has helped Kia strengthen its presence in the more competitive and fast-growing mainstream EV segment. Along with the Syros EV, Kia also offers the Carens Clavis EV, EV6 and EV9 in India.
Kia’s rise comes at a time when India’s electric-car market is becoming increasingly competitive. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility continued to lead the market with 14,722 units in September, followed by Mahindra Electric with 7,741 units and MG Motor with 5,226 units. However, Kia’s latest performance shows that new electric models are allowing established automakers to challenge one another more closely.
With the Syros EV attracting buyers and Kia expanding its electric portfolio, the company could continue to put pressure on traditional market leaders such as Maruti Suzuki in the coming months.
