Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Drive Nearly 40% of India’s Electric 2-Wheeler Sales in 2026

In 2026, India's electric two-wheeler retail sales officially crossed the 1.5 million mark, driven by improved battery technology and expanding charging infrastructure. This nationwide shift is overwhelmingly led by Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, which collectively account for nearly 40 percent of all EV two-wheelers sold. Progressive state-level policies and established local manufacturing hubs have turned these western and southern corridors into undeniable epicenters of electric mobility.

Maharashtra leads the charge with a 14.7 percent market share (232,544 units), followed closely by Karnataka at 12.6 percent (199,492 units) and Tamil Nadu at 11.7 percent (184,287 units). Beyond these primary hubs, adoption is rapidly expanding into tier-2 and tier-3 regional markets. States like Uttar Pradesh (129,145 units) and Madhya Pradesh (111,741 units) are posting remarkable retail numbers, proving the EV ecosystem is penetrating deeply across the country.
Legacy automakers have leveraged their vast dealership networks to dominate this electric boom. TVS Motor Company leads the market with 414,488 sales, followed by Bajaj Auto with 356,245 units. However, pure-play EV startups remain formidable, with Ather Energy capturing the third spot at 263,155 units, leading competitors like Hero MotoCorp and Ola Electric. As emerging brands like River Mobility and BGauss Auto add to a highly competitive ecosystem, this sales milestone lays a robust foundation for a greener future on Indian roads.
