New BMW iX5 Achieves 460 kW Charging in Major Technology Demonstration

BMW Group has teamed up with charging network provider IONNA and charging technology company Alpitronic to demonstrate high-power charging for the new BMW iX5 60 xDrive. During an international media event in Southern California, the electric SUV reached charging speeds of up to 460 kW, highlighting the potential of BMW’s next-generation electric vehicle technology.
The new iX5 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system, which features 800-volt technology and a new high-voltage battery with cylindrical cells. According to BMW, the 141 kWh battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes. The vehicle can also add up to 217 miles of WLTP range in just 10 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
IONNA is supporting the project by focusing on a reliable and convenient public charging experience for electric vehicle drivers. Its network is designed to offer dependable chargers, digital connectivity and charging benefits for eligible BMW customers. Alpitronic, meanwhile, provides the high-power charging hardware and its expertise in connecting advanced charging systems with next-generation electric vehicles.
BMW says the 460 kW charging demonstration represents an important step in the development of faster and more efficient electric mobility. However, the company has clarified that this was a technology demonstration and that charging hardware capable of delivering 460 kW is not commercially available across the United States today.
