In a striking turn of events in India's electric vehicle landscape, Vietnamese automaker VinFast has officially overtaken domestic heavyweight Maruti Suzuki in August 2026 retail EV sales. According to VAHAN registration data, VinFast Auto India surged by an impressive 43.53% month-over-month to register 2,196 units in August, climbing from 1,530 units in July. This aggressive growth trajectory propelled the relatively new entrant into the fourth position among all EV manufacturers in the country.

Maruti Suzuki India, on the other hand, witnessed a decline of 16.46% during the same period, slipping from 1,665 units in July to just 1,391 units in August. The drop pushed India's largest carmaker down to the fifth spot, marking a notable shift in consumer preference within the electric four-wheeler segment. While Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the overall Indian automotive market with its ICE portfolio, its EV offerings have yet to gain comparable traction against the rapidly scaling competition.

VinFast's rise is particularly significant given that it is a newcomer in the Indian market, challenging established legacy players with aggressive pricing and a focused EV-only strategy. The brand's ability to nearly double its footprint in a single month signals strong dealer network expansion, growing brand awareness, and perhaps most importantly, consumer confidence in its product lineup. As India's EV adoption accelerates, VinFast's momentum suggests that the battle for market share is far from settled, and newer global entrants are increasingly capable of disrupting the traditional hierarchy in the electric space.
